Escape the everyday without travelling too far
There is something incredibly refreshing about packing a small overnight bag, climbing into the car and heading off for a weekend away. I don’t always have the time or the budget for a long holiday but I have discovered that some of the best breaks are surprisingly close to home. Living in or near Durban gives us access to beautiful coastlines, rolling countryside, mountain views, forests and charming little towns that are all within an easy drive.
Sometimes all I need is a change of scenery. A peaceful morning overlooking the ocean, a walk through indigenous forests, a cosy fireplace on a chilly evening or lunch at a country café can make me feel as though I have been away for far longer than just a couple of days.
One of the things I appreciate most about weekend getaways is that they don’t require months of planning. Many destinations within two hours of Durban are perfect for spontaneous trips, anniversary weekends, family adventures or simply taking time to recharge after a busy week. Whether you enjoy wildlife, beaches, hiking, history, local markets or luxurious spas there really is something nearby for everyone.
KwaZulu-Natal has always impressed me with its diversity. Within a relatively short drive I can swap city life for peaceful countryside, lush valleys, dramatic cliffs or quiet beaches. Every trip reminds me that we don’t always have to travel hundreds of kilometres to create lasting memories.
If you have been feeling the need to slow down, reconnect with nature or simply enjoy quality time with the people you love then these weekend destinations may be exactly what you’re looking for.
Why short weekend getaways are so rewarding
Life has a habit of becoming busy without us even noticing. Work, family commitments, household responsibilities and endless to-do lists can leave us feeling mentally exhausted before we realise we need a break.
A weekend away offers something that a day trip often cannot. It gives me permission to switch off completely. I don’t feel rushed to get back home before dark and I can enjoy slow mornings with a cup of coffee while listening to birds instead of traffic.
Short breaks are also far more affordable than lengthy holidays. Fuel costs are lower, accommodation is easier to budget for and there is less pressure to squeeze every possible activity into the trip.
Another advantage is flexibility. If the weather forecast looks promising I can often book accommodation at short notice and enjoy an unexpected escape without weeks of preparation.
Even returning to a favourite destination never feels repetitive because every season offers something different. Summer brings warm beaches and outdoor cafés while winter offers cosy fireplaces, misty mornings and beautiful mountain scenery.
The Midlands Meander
If someone asked me to recommend just one destination for a relaxing weekend from Durban the Midlands Meander would almost certainly be my first suggestion.
The drive itself feels like the beginning of the holiday. As the city slowly disappears behind me the scenery changes into rolling green hills, farms, forests and winding country roads. The Midlands has a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Life seems to move at a gentler pace here and I always find myself slowing down naturally.
One of my favourite ways to spend the weekend is simply exploring. There are artisan shops, chocolate makers, cheese producers, pottery studios, weaving workshops and galleries tucked away throughout the region. Each stop offers something unique and often includes the opportunity to meet the people creating beautiful handmade products.
Food lovers will be equally happy. The area is known for excellent cafés, farm restaurants and bakeries serving generous portions of homemade food. Fresh bread, locally roasted coffee, seasonal produce and homemade desserts seem to appear around every corner.
If I want something more active there are hiking trails, mountain biking routes, horse riding experiences and canopy tours available throughout the area.
Accommodation ranges from affordable self-catering cottages to luxurious country lodges complete with fireplaces, spa treatments and spectacular views.
During winter I particularly enjoy staying somewhere with a roaring fire while the mist rolls across the hills outside. It creates the perfect atmosphere for slowing down with a good book.
Ballito and the Dolphin Coast
Sometimes I don’t want a countryside escape. Sometimes I simply want to hear the ocean. Ballito offers one of the easiest beach getaways from Durban while still feeling like a proper holiday destination.
The promenade is perfect for early morning walks and the warm Indian Ocean provides excellent opportunities for swimming throughout most of the year. One of the highlights is spotting dolphins. The Dolphin Coast lives up to its name and seeing pods playing in the waves always makes the experience even more memorable.
The town has grown considerably over the years but it has managed to retain a relaxed holiday atmosphere. There are excellent restaurants overlooking the sea, boutique shops, coffee houses and plenty of accommodation options to suit different budgets.
Families will appreciate the tidal pools, safe beaches and playgrounds while couples can enjoy romantic sunset dinners overlooking the coastline.
Nearby Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach and Tinley Manor each offer their own quieter charm for visitors wanting a more peaceful seaside experience.
Howick
Whenever I feel like combining history, nature and good food I find myself heading towards Howick.
The famous Howick Falls never fail to impress. Standing beside the waterfall and watching thousands of litres of water plunge into the gorge below reminds me just how powerful nature can be. The surrounding area offers beautiful walking trails and picnic spots where I can simply sit and appreciate the peaceful surroundings.
History lovers will also enjoy visiting the Nelson Mandela Capture Site. The sculpture and museum provide a moving reminder of one of South Africa’s most significant historical moments and encourage thoughtful reflection.
Howick also serves as an excellent base for exploring the wider Midlands. Many visitors spend the morning at the falls before enjoying lunch at one of the nearby cafés and then browsing local craft stores during the afternoon.
It is the sort of destination where there is no pressure to rush. The slower pace becomes part of the attraction.
Scottburgh and the South Coast
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast often receives less attention than the North Coast but I believe it deserves far more recognition.
Scottburgh combines beautiful beaches with a welcoming small-town atmosphere that makes it ideal for a relaxed weekend away. The beaches are well maintained and offer excellent swimming conditions. Early mornings are especially peaceful with fishermen preparing their boats while walkers enjoy the sunrise over the Indian Ocean.
The area is popular for diving thanks to nearby reefs while surfers also appreciate the consistent waves.
One of my favourite things about Scottburgh is that it never feels overcrowded. Even during busier holiday periods there are quieter corners where you can simply enjoy the sound of the sea.
Nearby golf courses, nature reserves and coastal walking routes provide plenty to do without feeling rushed from one attraction to another.
The South Coast is also known for friendly hospitality. Many guest houses are family owned and visitors often receive personal recommendations that help uncover hidden local gems.
Karkloof
If your idea of relaxation involves towering trees, waterfalls and fresh mountain air then Karkloof deserves a place on your travel list. I have spent a few weekends here with girlfriends and we have had the best time.
The indigenous forests create an entirely different atmosphere from Durban’s coastline. Walking beneath the tall trees feels calming from the very first moment. Birdwatchers will find plenty to enjoy here while hikers can explore a variety of trails suitable for different fitness levels.
The Karkloof Canopy Tour offers an unforgettable experience for those looking for a little adventure. Gliding through the forest above the trees provides spectacular views while still allowing visitors to appreciate the area’s incredible natural beauty. There were lots of laughs and giggles with the girls when we did this.
The nearby Karkloof Falls add another reason to spend a weekend exploring this peaceful region.
Whether you enjoy photography, wildlife or simply escaping the noise of everyday life Karkloof offers a refreshing reminder of how beautiful KwaZulu-Natal truly is.
Drakensberg foothills
One of my favourite discoveries has been that I don’t always have to drive deep into the Drakensberg to enjoy its beauty. The foothills are close enough for a wonderfully relaxing weekend while still offering those magnificent mountain views that make you feel a world away from city life.
There is something incredibly calming about waking up to crisp country air, watching the morning mist slowly lift from the valleys and listening to birds instead of traffic. Even if I spend most of the weekend doing very little, I always return home feeling refreshed.
Many lodges and self-catering cottages in the foothills offer fireplaces, private verandas and breathtaking views. During winter I enjoy wrapping myself in a blanket with a hot cup of coffee while the mountains slowly come to life as the sun rises.
For anyone who enjoys the outdoors there are gentle walking trails, horse riding opportunities, mountain biking routes and fly fishing. If your idea of a perfect weekend is slowing down rather than rushing from one attraction to another then this part of KwaZulu-Natal is difficult to beat.
Tala Game Reserve
Sometimes I want a little adventure without spending hours in the car and Tala Game Reserve offers exactly that. Located less than an hour from Durban, Tala is one of those places that reminds me how fortunate we are to have incredible wildlife so close to home.
Driving through the reserve always fills me with anticipation because I never know what I might see around the next bend. Zebra quietly grazing, elegant giraffes reaching into the trees, wildebeest crossing the road and numerous antelope species all make every visit feel different. The highlight or me was seeing the rhinos. I love watching these huge, prehistoric looking beasts calmly grazing on the hillside.
The reserve is also a wonderful destination for photographers. Early morning and late afternoon light create beautiful conditions for capturing wildlife and landscapes. Birdwatchers will also find plenty to enjoy with hundreds of bird species recorded in the reserve throughout the year.
Whether I choose to spend a single day exploring or stay nearby for the weekend, Tala always reminds me that nature has an incredible way of restoring perspective.
Umhlanga
Sometimes the best getaway is surprisingly close to home. If I simply need a weekend to relax without driving long distances, Umhlanga offers everything I need.
The beachfront promenade is one of my favourite places for an early morning stroll. Watching the waves roll in while enjoying fresh sea air immediately slows my pace and clears my mind. The iconic lighthouse has become one of KwaZulu-Natal’s most photographed landmarks and provides a beautiful backdrop for holiday photographs.
Umhlanga also offers outstanding restaurants, boutique shopping, luxury hotels, cosy guest houses and beautiful beaches. One of the things I enjoy most is leaving the car parked once I’ve checked in. Everything is close enough to explore on foot, making the weekend feel wonderfully relaxed.
Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a girls’ weekend or simply treating yourself to a short break, Umhlanga delivers a little luxury without requiring extensive travel.
Mount Moreland
Not every memorable weekend has to revolve around luxury accommodation or busy tourist attractions. Mount Moreland offers something wonderfully different.
Every year thousands of European Barn Swallows gather here before beginning their incredible migration back to Europe. Watching them arrive at sunset is one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in South Africa. As the birds fill the evening sky they create swirling patterns that seem almost choreographed. The atmosphere is fantastic as families pack picnic baskets and have sundowners whilst watching the beautiful spectacle.
Even outside migration season the surrounding countryside offers peaceful drives, birdwatching opportunities and charming cafés.
For anyone interested in nature, photography or simply experiencing something unique, Mount Moreland is well worth adding to a weekend itinerary.
Camper and caravan weekends
One of the most affordable ways to enjoy regular weekend breaks is by travelling with a caravan or camper. KwaZulu-Natal offers an excellent selection of caravan parks within two hours of Durban, many of them positioned close to beaches, rivers or forests.
There is something wonderfully satisfying about setting up camp, lighting a braai and spending the evening beneath a sky full of stars. Children quickly make friends, neighbours often become temporary travelling companions and the slower pace encourages genuine conversations that sometimes get lost in everyday life.
Many campsites now offer excellent facilities including swimming pools, modern ablutions, playgrounds and even small cafés. If you already own a caravan, these short trips allow you to enjoy it regularly without needing extended leave from work.
Romantic escapes
Every relationship benefits from time away together. One of the things I enjoy about KwaZulu-Natal is the variety of romantic accommodation available within easy driving distance of Durban.
Luxury lodges tucked away in forests, cosy cottages overlooking rolling hills, boutique hotels beside the ocean and secluded cabins all create opportunities to reconnect without the distractions of daily life.
Some offer spa treatments, candlelit dinners, private hot tubs or outdoor fire pits where couples can spend quiet evenings together beneath the stars.
A romantic getaway doesn’t have to be extravagant. Sometimes sharing breakfast while watching the sunrise or taking an unhurried walk together becomes the memory you treasure most.
Family-friendly weekend
Travelling with children requires a slightly different approach but KwaZulu-Natal certainly doesn’t disappoint. Many destinations within two hours of Durban offer activities suitable for every age.
Children can safely explore nature reserves, visit farm animals, paddle in tidal pools, enjoy mini golf, feed ducks or discover easy walking trails. Parents often appreciate destinations that provide enough activities to keep children entertained while still allowing adults to relax.
Some family resorts include swimming pools, games rooms, organised children’s activities and spacious gardens where youngsters can burn off energy safely.
The beauty of these shorter breaks is that children spend less time travelling and more time enjoying the destination itself.
Hidden gems that locals sometimes overlook
Living close to beautiful places sometimes makes it easy to forget they exist. I’ve found that some of my favourite weekends have happened in destinations that weren’t famous at all.
Small farm stalls serving homemade pies and fresh coffee, quiet forest walks, scenic country roads, local craft markets and family-run guest houses often become the highlights of an entire trip.
Instead of trying to visit every attraction in one weekend I prefer leaving space for unexpected discoveries. Sometimes the best memories come from turning down an unfamiliar country road, chatting to friendly locals or finding a peaceful picnic spot with spectacular views.
Those unplanned moments often become the stories I tell long after the weekend has ended.
Making the most of your weekend getaway
One lesson I have come to appreciate is that a successful weekend isn’t about fitting in as many activities as possible. I enjoy choosing one or two experiences each day and allowing plenty of time to simply relax.
Packing comfortable clothing, checking the weather forecast before leaving, booking popular restaurants in advance and planning a scenic route all help make the weekend feel effortless.
I also try to put my phone away whenever possible. Reading a book, watching wildlife, sharing a meal or simply sitting quietly with a beautiful view often provides the mental rest I didn’t realise I needed.
The beauty of destinations within two hours of Durban is that they remain accessible throughout the year. Whether I have a full weekend available or just one night away, there is always somewhere nearby waiting to be explored.
Every great escape begins with a simple decision
One of the things I love most about living in KwaZulu-Natal is knowing that a change of scenery is never far away. Within two hours of Durban I can find quiet beaches, rolling countryside, misty forests, mountain views, wildlife reserves and welcoming little towns that each offer something special.
These short getaways have taught me that I don’t need an elaborate holiday to feel rested. Sometimes one peaceful weekend is enough to reset my mind, reconnect with the people I love and return home with a fresh perspective.
Whether you choose a luxurious country lodge, a cosy self-catering cottage, a beachfront apartment or a campsite beneath the stars, the memories you create often have very little to do with how much you spend. They come from watching the sunrise over the ocean, sharing laughter around a braai, discovering a hidden café or simply enjoying the rare gift of having nowhere else you need to be.
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to take a break, perhaps this is your sign. Pack a small bag, choose a destination that speaks to you and give yourself permission to slow down for a while. You may be surprised how much difference one weekend can make.
